Beowulf

Beowulf

Jessica Wymbs , Aug 19TH 07”

The story of Beowulf , was very mind catching! I mean at first I thought I wasn’t going to like it by it being so long and all; I ended up liking it anyways. The writer really spent a lot of time and detail into this poem; and you know some poems aren’t even that long; well this one is, but It was worth reading.
The parts that stuck out to me the most was like how the story has a lot of detail, like when “Grendel Attacks“; Grendel came in so strong ! And that’s what made me want to read on! Grendel killed so many people and it was like he was doing it for fun. Grendel did this for 12yrs! He had people singing songs about how he was so evil and nobody could stop him. I was like wow, and it made me think about religion and all; and then he took his place in the temple a.k.a the Hall wow!; I was thinking this character is bad, but it made me want to see what was going to happen.
This story and Anglo-Saxons to me relates together as in religion wise! Because they are God fearing, wars and fights, invasions and all! They really do relate!
1. Anglo- Saxon= “Alfred's success as well as the spread of Christianity”
2. Beowulf= They thanked God for an easy trip.
3. Episode 5 the speeches= "For this sight I givethanks to the Almighty.I have suffered muchfrom Grendel's scourge.God, the glorious protector, works wonder after wonder.Only yesterday I expectedthese woes would never end--this best of housesstood shining in bloodand all my wise ones saidwe could never protect the people and landfrom the work of demonsand evil spirits. Nowa warrior, through God's might, has performed a deed we,in our wisdom, could not contrive. The woman who bore you,Beowulf, if she yet lives, may say the Eternal Makerwas kind in her child bearing. Now, Beowulf, best of warriors,I love you as a son:have from this momenta new kinship. Nor will there be any lack of earthly things I have power over.Often I have given giftsto a lesser warrior, weakerin fighting. You have, byyour deeds, achieved fameforever. May God repay youalways as He has just now!"
And he’s referring to the ways of God.
The reason I picked the three is because I really think both of the stories has a Christian like feel to them like, they are or could be a story in or from the Bible.
Beowulf is a hero who slays the monster (demon) Gendel and his mom the mermaid; but before them he slayed many other things. He was well known for being the best, and lost but won his last fight with the dragon. Even if he died he saved a lot of people the pain by also killing the dragon.
Beowulf is like every other hero they have their strengths and their weaknesses! It’s like the saying “ all good things must come to an end” . In this case that’s what happened. The intro the author gave to him , is what every hero has to have! “ he was the strongest of menalive in that day, mighty and noble.” That right there let’s you know that he has the upper hand.
When Beowulf dies wow! I wasn’t expecting it to happen!, but like I said all good things must come to an end. I also see it as if he won, because he saved a lot of people for killing the dragon because the dragon was burning up everything in it’s path, just think if Beowulf would have only died and not the dragon it would have been more pain!
His people; of course they took it hard, because he was their hero!, what are they going to do now without him?
The funeral was a funeral, who likes a funeral? Not me! But his people was very sadden by the fact their hero was gone. When I first read this I thought Beowulf was going to rein forever because he was so mighty but, again I say “all good things must come to an end”

Above it all I liked the story very much!

You have a very good start here.

The section where you should compare Beowulf to a modern hero needs a little work. You should compare how Beowulf is simolar or different to a modern hero like Superman, Spiderman, etc. Make sure you have some evidence in that section.

I am glad you picked up on the religious content in Beowulf. Did you know it was not originally there? This was originally an oral story, but when books were being made, it was monks who copied them, and many added the religious elements that you commented on.

You only have that little bit to fix. Send me another comment when you have taken care of that.

Thanks.
